Passion for Sound

Hi, I’m Lachlan! With a passion for all things audio and a background that uniquely blends music and technology, I'm here to guide you through the captivating world of audio products.
As someone with a degree in hearing and speech, my love for sound extends beyond just listening. For the last 25+ years, I've immersed myself in the melodies of the piano, violin, and viola, giving me a deep appreciation for the nuances of music. My professional journey in the consumer audio industry only amplified this passion, equipping me with insights and expertise that I'm eager to share with you.
In my world, it's not just about reviewing the latest gadgets; it's about understanding the 'why' behind their sound. Why do certain headphones make a song feel close to heart? What makes a speaker system stand out? I’m here to demystify these questions with a mix of engaging conversation, professional analysis, and a dash of fun and humour where appropriate.

My new reference! Westone Mach 70 IEM review
Is it Linux compatible?
So, Nano vs Arya stealth?
FYI, I have the 109s, Edition xs, and just ordered the Verum 2.
Quite happy with my DH Labs Mirage usb that I bought on a random eBay search from a disposed project on the sellers behalf for a relatively again price. Any differences…yes, transparency allowing far more accurate detail. Cables are getting even better these days. I use better power cords than stock that come with most audio products and it’s always a notable upgrade in sonic quality.
Interesting review. What would you recommend for a drummer that wants to listen to backing tracks directly from iPhone or iPad and still be able to hear the drums and backing tracking while playing drums at the same time?
Hey brother would you like to borrow my susvara to compare it against the unveiled if you have one on its way for testing? I am not sure how long it will take to ship to you from Canada though haha - George from Vancouver
Loved this! Would love to see a comparison of the Caldera Closed vs. Open.
How does the holo audio red compare to the U2 mini in your opinion? (It's quite a bit cheaper and also well regarded)
The Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones offer excellent audio quality for music. However, they may not be the best choice for video calls or meetings, particularly in an open office environment, as the microphone tends to pick up surrounding noises, including conversations from colleagues. Additionally, they are not suitable for sports activities due to overheating issues. It would be beneficial for Sennheiser to consider reintroducing physical buttons for volume and other controls.
After a few months of listening to the stock U2 Mini, I purchased the LHY PSU kit and built a LPS with favorable internals and other parts($400 total). Not that I expected any substantial change in sound, I just like to build and tinker with electronics, any improvement would be serendipitous. The increase in performance literally left me with a gapping maw. I was already heavily impressed with the Lumin upgrade from a digione sig., but this simple power chain swap took the mini to a "WOW" of state of appreciation. I can't say it bridges the gap between the two Lumin units, as I have no reference, but goddamn, it's cost to benefit ratio I feel is well worth the investment coupled with the enjoyment of the build. Happy listening!
“Not to worry about what’s right or wrong in this hobby, because nothing is“ My position is some things are right and some things are wrong and they can easily be demonstrated. If you claim that you can hear the discernable difference between two mains cables, or fuses then I call bullshit. If you claim that you can identify the sound produced by a certain Lamborghini and you can detect one 100 km away with your golden ears I would also call bullshit.
Were you running the WiiM Mini bit-perfect? The inferior SoC is indeed an issue in volume normalization and EQ, but is it also an issue if you are avoiding the DAC *AND* DSP altogether?
Great video. I own the Lumin U2 ( Not the Mini ) . My conclusion to use COAX Output to my DAC ( Transparent Digital 75 Ohm Cable )
I owned one 1 meter sound is good , but prefer 2 meter flexible usb cable to my ipad supra Excalibur my choice
These are on sale on hifiman’s site for $69 😅 are these worth it?
Would be perfect if they had a mic😢
Good review, I would suggest ditching the binding post links as they probably are smearing the sound and get something better.
I have mjolnir 3 and bifrost 2 , is the can help , and how can I connect
How do these compare to HQPlayer as a source?
My coworker got a Raspberry Pi 3, 4, and 5, along with the HiFiBerry DAC2 ADC Pro sound card hat and a case to put it all in. The hat alone was $75, and I don't even want to know the total cost of everything else he bought. We installed a 128GB memory card with the newest Raspberry Pi OS downloaded from the Pi website. We did everything: editing config files, going in as root, editing stuff, trying everything on your website, editing the config file to turn off HDMI sound-just a ton of absolutely ridiculous stuff to try to get it to work. We tried all three versions of the Raspberry Pi hardware as well. There are no definitive drivers or installers. My guess is you depend on the Raspberry Pi OS to load most of it by default and use some kind of mumbo jumbo homebrew code to make it kind of haphazardly force it to work. Then, when Raspberry Pi updates, it leaves your device with so many variables that only a pro user who knows everything about the OS might have a chance, if they are lucky, to get it working. I'm just being honest, not trying to put your company down. I feel that you guys need to STOP, take a step back, and look at what you're doing. Work on developing software and driver packs with 6 or fewer clicks to auto-detect the sound card and install it, with some tools to test and make sure the sound card is working. If the sound card fails to install, have it provide some useful information on WHY. Frankly, the HiFiBerry and Raspberry Pi platform is a complete joke, basically a kid's toy dressed up to look serious. In this day and age, if you can't just snap it together, load the OS, load the driver, and have it just work, then it's basically a waste of time. I told my coworker to give up on it, send the HiFiBerry and anything he can back, and get his money back. I can build him a basic PC with a Creative sound card that will run circles around this little tinker toy product.
Ah, I've been looking at all of these for a while trying to decide what to get. All the RUclipsrs constantly rave about the "natural tonality and soundstage" offered by R2R DACs, but do multibit DACs compete with that while offering better bass? What's an audiophile or just plain music lover to do? Hope you can shed some light on this. I keep wondering if I'd be happy with a Bifrost or be constantly wishing I had Pontius II 12th? Or should I save my pennies and get the Yggy? Also, if fed via USB, do these DACs have good clocking to remove jitter? Thanks!
Yea placebo effect is extremely strong. I work in medicine and can confirm this. I’d love to see a test where someone changes a persons cables without their knowledge and they go on playing their system like nothing happened. I’d wager no one would notice a difference
Thanks
Thank you!! 🙏♥️
The only feature that really matters to me in a streamer, is it being able to send bits to my DAC wirelessly at a reasonable price. I give any Lumin product an epic fail, for this reason. I don't even need a display. The Lumin ones could be better, at those prices.
Do you mean going Bluetooth from the streamer to the DAC?
Great review, as always. Wonder why a $2400 streamer doesn't have a lps
That is an interesting question now that you mention it!
Hey mate, I am thinking of buying the dt700 pro x, but also considering the new dt770 pro x, what is better for music - rather, what do u enjoy?
I would definitely choose the DT 700 Pro X for music listening as it's still dynamic and fun, but less extreme than the 770 so it's more versatile.
I had the lumin u2 mini and the a8 both at home through usb to my mscaler and tt2, and thought the difference was there, but not so much as you seem to explain it? Did I test wrong? Or is this one of those examples the’re both very very good, and differences on this level of hifi are already small to begin with.
The differences definitely aren't gigantic, but significant IMO. It can also depend on the rest of your source chain, including cables, speakers/headphones, amp (if using a separate amp), etc.
I did notice a bigger difference with the bigger brother, but the price was 3 times the price of the a8. I payed 1600 for it (new). And I liked the multi software flexibility of the a8 more. But the u2 was a very nice streamer, but is somewhat more limited in feature set.
Nano is currently sold at $499 and Arya stealth at $759. Do you think the additional $260 is worth the investment?
From memory, the Arya is still the clearly better headphone, but whether it's worth it is a very personal decision.
Hi mate...i really enjoy your content lately... recently i was on upgrade journey and have found things that i was not expecting. I moved from kef r300 to r3 meta(i know...not a spectacular change but i like kef sound and that extra refinment with a good deal from a friend was no brainer). Then from arcam A19 to atoll in200 o boy...that was quite a change initially it was all very exciting but at some point the hights got too exciting and the bass was lacking some weight. I then have found that my speaker cables (van den hul) main aspect was pushing the highs...and with some research i went for mogami w3104. I never tought that cables would sound differently...but o boy...the hights calmed down which was very noticeable thought the bass hasn't changed so much. Now i sold my wiim mini (after watching your video) and i am thinking for its replacement. I will use the atoll in200 dac which is reasonable. I was considering between wiim pro and A6 but almost everyone is saying A6 sound is very bright even as a source only and i am not willing to push my system that way. What would you recomend? Maybe wiim pro with ifi power adapter? Or what else is there?
Any chance of comparing the upsampling on the Lumin with the Chord M scaler?
I can't remember if I did that in my Lumin T3 review. From what I remember, the upsampling is very good, but doesn't have the benefit of the digital filters in the M-Scaler or using HQ Player.
Tested the U2 against my venerable NAD 50.2 and felt it sounded better until…….wait for it…..I put a Netgear powered switch in so I could do side by side comparison. It improved the 50.2 so much I kept it and returned the Lumin. Stunned me. I put another one in my vintage system also…..improvement. Stunned with this 45.00 tweak. Awesome.
It's amazing the difference that removing some noise can make. Glad you're enjoying it!
Great review. I've had the U2, the U2 Mini, and the Hifi Rose RS 130 in my system. The U2 sounded the best to me. It is a great match for the Holo May KTE. If you are looking for a streamer for the May dac, I highly recommend checking out the U2. The Mini was also special, especially for the money and small form factor.
Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Had my IE900 a week now. Absolutely stunning. Best musical experience of my life.
I'm so glad you're enjoying them!
Could you see the Lumin Mini straight to the VTV GaN amp that only has digital in? According to the website, the mini does have volume control. Thoughts? In terms of price / value? Thx
It appears that should work because the GaN accepts a SPDIF coaxial input and the Lumins have that output as well as volume control. I can't comment on the performance though as I haven't heard the amp.
Nice video review Lachlan, thanks for posting it. 🙂 I'm starting to realize audio and an interest in it follows the same pattern of brewing espresso and the machines dedicated to it. Similar arguments, comment section wars. etc.
Yes. It seems to be all hobbies, Michael. Espresso, cameras, cars, audio... 🤷
Thanks!
Thanks so much! 🙏♥️
I felt the mids were too recessed on the Z1R when I owned them, but they have loyal following. They are def the pinnacle of design in the headphone game. I appreciated that aspect of ownership when I had them in.
Can you adjust the EQ on the eversolo to make sound a bit more richer and less thin?
Sort of, but it's not about adjusting the frequency response as both will be outputting a technically flat measuring signal. The issue is that the Lumin streamers are keeping more noise out of the circuits and that produces a smoother and more pleasing sound. No amount of EQ can do that, unfortunately.
@@PassionforSound can there be anything added to the Eversolo Control if I put in a different op amp inside of the Eversolo Control that help reduce the noise .
I using it. Great value
After watch ur review .i bought one . cant find any good review about this cable thank
I have the U2 Mini. Wondering if an LPS mod would, for around $700aud, give me the sound of the U2, with change in the bank. I know it void’s warranty (expired anyway) but not convinced it’s worth the hassle 🤷🏻♂️
I can't answer that without trying it. I imagine it might help, but couldn't say how much.
I’m using dmp a6 master with LPS, if I get a network switch will it improve the sound to bring it closer to the U2 performance?
No, unfortunately not. I'm using a network switch with my DMP-A8 too, but the gap is still significant.
How can you not play with FMC if you are into CAS? even the cheapest FMC when done right will provide the difference probably bigger than upgrade from A8 to U2.
FMC? CAS?
Can't comment on Lumin but my Denafrips ARCE bested my Wiim Pro IMO as a digital streamer. Soundstage, instr. separation etc. Wiim sounded thicker in mid-bass. Night and day difference, not in my head. Matter of taste. Great review!
Thanks for sharing your experiences! Glad you liked the review.
Is there a 120V Supra LoRad power board for US customers? I can't seem to find any
I think they make it for 120V, but their website, distribution and marketing aren't particularly good so I'm not certain - sorry
I would have loved you to compare Rose RS-130 to U2.
I've had both in my system at the same time. The U2 has a slightly smaller sound stage, a more black background, and a more analog and relaxed presentation. The Rose has a larger sound stage and is more three dimensional, but it can sound "digital" on certain cuts. The sound stage of the U2, while not as large as the Rose, just sounds right. Similarly, the U2 can be very three dimensional but in a way that allows my Holo May KTE dac to retain its analog personality. In my system, I preferred the U2. That said, the Rose is very cool and has some very nice features. The screen was awesome.
I'd love to compare those too!
Thank you for saying this. I'm in, subscribed wholeheartedly. I'm here for the fun of it as you are. Cracking channel.
Thank you! 🙏♥️
Pats wiim. There there. It's ok.
😂♥️
People throw around terms like "better sound" without defining what that means .. its just so subjective ... in my opinion, and im not trying to be rude here, but if you're making these kind of claims then I would like to see some true blind testing comparisons for some evidence that "stuff that shouldn't matter" does actually matter..
It should matter though. Power supply and noise have always mattered. He defines what it means in this video
Yep. As Pete said, I'm pretty sure I described in detail exactly what changed in the sound and why I preferred it. On this occasion, it's also fairly evident why the improvements occur too.
Fiber Optic SFP Outlets & LC fiber interconnect cables............................... Well, it's here & this is the 2nd audio component seen this week offering it. SFP is a 10 Gig Bus. Say goodbye to AES & Toslink. It will be SFP/LC & the new standard USB-'C' as the digital connections of choice now. This is why I always say NEVER mix digital with analog inside components. Digital goes obsolete way too soon to mix. Acid Jazz, Funk & Brass 🔈🔉🔊
Great review, I own T2 and my observations are in line with your review. Question: what do you think of Lumin s volume control?
I don't really use the volume on streamers as it's always handled downstream for me with an amp or preamp, but the brief play I had with it on the T3 review made me think it was pretty solid.
I've been an advocate of streaming transports for a while, and recently traded in my Auralic Aries G2 (which I loved, but it developed a fault) for a Hifi Rose RS130. It's a better sounding, much more versatile and user friendly streamer. I highly recommend it. It's not cheap, but I still think it is decent value compared to it's peers.
That's another brand and model I'm keen to check out at some point.
